The Brooklyn Papersby Tom Callan
Waterfalls Cafe Judging by the restaurant's name, it should come as no surprise to patrons entering Waterfalls Cafe, at 144 Atlantic Ave., that they are greeted by a miniature waterfall, complete with rocks, foliage and tinkling water. But surprise or no, the experience sets the tone for a pleasurable dining experience. According to owner Aladdin Hussari, such displays are traditional in Arab homes, where water is scarce and precious. If water is a welcome sight in the desert, surely this 6-month-old restaurant is a welcome addition to western Atlantic Avenue, one of Brooklyn's fastest-growing dining spots. Waterfalls Cafe features Mediterranean food at moderate prices. Hussari, a chef in his own right, has created a menu with all the traditional favorites - hommos, baba ghanooj, shish kabob and couscous - as well as many more exotic dishes like koosa (stuffed squash), kibbeh labanya (a cracked wheat dumpling stuffed with ground meat, onions and pinenuts, swimming in a yogurt sauce) and fried cauliflower. If you happen to be a vegetarian. Waterfalls Cafe is a haven you'll soon want to call home. Many traditionally meatbased dishes, such as stuffed cabbage, are also prepared vegetarian style. And there are lots of vegetarian salads to tempt your palate: eggplant salad, yogurt salad and the Waterfalls Special, with parsley and squash. Waterfalls Cafe serves many vegetable and fruit juices, all freshly made. For dessert you can choose from pastries and puddings, accompanied by mint tea, or a choice of American or Arabic coffee. Everything at Waterfalls Cafe is prepared in style and served with a down-home warmth and hospitality. Waterfalls Cafe caters for all occasions and delivers free, whenever you want to turn any meal into an occasion.
